New England Highway, Maitland, NSW

The New England Highway is the main north-south inland corridor connecting the Hunter Region to the Queensland border. Recently the NSW Roads and Maritime Services completed upgrades to the highway at Maitland costing $45 million. The aim of the project was to create an efficient and reliable transport corridor to cater for the increasing population growth in the area and improve road safety. The upgrade included two new roundabouts at Maitland; one was installed near the hospital at High Street and the other near the railway station at Church Street, which also included a two lane eastbound bridge over the roundabout.

Project Design Brief

Designers needed to increase traffic capacity through the Church Street roundabout and were restricted by the amount of reclaimed land available for the extra lane. The reduced shoulder width necessitated a compact continuous capture drainage system to ensure all rainwater run-off would be quickly and efficiently removed from the road surface.

ACO's Solution

  • KerbDrain QK200SF
  • ACO’s Technical Services Department provided designers with hydraulic performance data including slot intake capacities and the optimum distance to position drainage pits

Benefits

  • The 500mm lengths enabled installation around the tight radius of the super elevations
  • KerbDrain is a compact drainage system enabling extra space for additional lanes to be constructed
  • Access units provide easy access for rodding during maintenance
