The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) has created a temporary ‘pop-up’ recreational space in a former car park while the site awaits redevelopment. At a cost of $1.2 million, the 2800m2 site provides multi-use sports courts, spectator seating, table tennis, BBQ facilities, bike parking, event space, landscaping, timber deck and sun shading for students and staff attending the university as well as people from the wider community.

ACO Infrastructure

Project Design Brief
Due to the high volume of pedestrians utilising the site for social and recreational activities, designers needed to ensure the asphalt playing surfaces and surrounding pavements were as flat as possible for player and spectator safety. Flat pavements create a challenge to collect all surface water. A slight gradient on the pavement sloping away from the playing surface was created. The drainage system needed to ensure no water would encroach on to the adjoining footpaths. Grates were required to be heel friendly and slip resistant.

ACO’s Solution

  • KlassikDrain KS100 system with Stainless 5 Star Heelsaferegistration mark Anti-Slip grates
  • ACO’s Technical Services Department provided designers with the intake capacity of the grate ensuring there would be no bypass of the grate

Benefits

  • The QuickLok boltless locking system provides quick and efficient removal of the grate by RMIT maintenance staff
  • The Stainless 5 Star Heelsaferegistration mark Anti-Slip grates are slip resistant and are safe to walk
    on in heels
