Overseas Passenger Terminal, Sydney, NSW
Sydney is one of the world’s leading cruise destinations and Sydney’s Overseas Passenger Terminal (OPT) at Circular Quay recently underwent a $22 M upgrade to accommodate the increased levels of cruise tourism. The OPT wharf was lengthened 60 metres and widened 16 metres to accommodate the world’s largest cruise ships like the Queen Mary 2, with passenger numbers sometimes exceeding four thousand. The aim of the upgrade was to improve the terminals’ efficiency and capacity by streamlining passenger traffic movement, enhancing passenger amenities and providing more space for trucks arriving with supplies.
The upgrade enabled the ships to achieve a smoother one-day turnaround by improving access for servicing and also improving public access through and around the terminal.
Project Design Brief
The increased public spaces required pedestrian safe grates that were also strong enough for a variety of commercial vehicles and an efficient drainage system suitable for large expanses of flat pavements.
