Usually the trench drain reaches hydraulic capacity before grate intake hydraulics affect performance. However, occasionally grate hydraulics become the determining factor, particularly if catchment slopes are large and catchment run-off is high.

To determine grate performance, the following information is required;
Lateral inflow rate
Pavement type
Geometry of catchment area including slope approaching the grate

100% Capture
All liquid flowing through grate

Less than 100% Capture
Not all liquid flowing through grate - bypass has occurred. Could be due to not enough grate clear opening, too much liquid, or too much slope perpendicular to grate

ACO provides a complimentary service for grate intake hydraulics. Click here for details.

Grate By-Pass
The angle of approach perpendicular to the grate can be critical in grating intake performance. The greater the angle the greater the velocity of liquid. The geometry (slot shape and dimension) can have a significant effect on the capture. This grate slot geometry effectiveness can change with the shape.
